Dansko or Danish shoe is a company with its grassroots in Denmark but with company headquarters in West Groove, Pennsylvania. The company was founded by a wife and husband team by the names Mandy Cabot and Peter Kjellerup . Peter is Danish while Mandy is American. It all started when Mandy and Peter were making comfortable shoes from a barn shoe shop in Denmark and sharing them with their friends in US. This word went around about the relaxed nature of the shoes and thus it slowly became a hit. Peter and Mandy were also in the horse trade and even in horse shows they would bring their shoes in their old car and there in the site of the horse show the shoes would sell quickly. Then they decided to form a company and Dansko was formed.
The company has a very different kind of vision. Money is not what the founders of the company are after, it’s the social responsibility which drives them for an environment friendly organization. Dansko makes earth a better place by building communities around the people of the company .They are certified by LEEDS Gold Certification for the environmentally friendly and natural resource conservation programs. There are a lot of noticeable features in and around of Dansko headquarters. They have vegetated roofs, living walls with plants, rain water collection, wind energy solutions and a host of other natural energy conservatory projects. They are also into community services like relief for victims of floods or natural disasters, look after old people, pay volunteers for community service and other socially positive policies and programs. Dansko shoes are widely used for its comfort wear. Their "store benefit charities" offer seconds sale in all of the stores located around the Dansko community premises in West Groove. The second’s shops are not meant for defective shoes but it is only some cosmetic errors for which the shoes are not sold in the retail stores. One would not find it uncomfortable to wear the seconds’ shoes.
Dansko manufactured shoes starting from sandals, clogs, boots, sneakers, and slippers. Men’s footwear range between $75 to $100 while those for women range from $60 to $100. The community at Dansko relies mainly on their individual skills and team work to work their livelihood. There are a lot of different programs being held voluntarily by the community people and the employees regularly. It is said that Dansko is a company run by its own employees and they are the share holders of the company. In other words, it can be said that Dansko is a self sufficient community business and is not part of the cut throat which is found nearly everywhere in the US or in the world. Mandy and Peter have made a small difference to a strong vision through their hard work and feeling of responsibility towards the society they live in. The contribution may be small compared to the vastness of the requirement but there is a positive vibe working in this effort and also a very strong message that if one has a positive outlook and a sincere effort to change things for the better one definitely can achieve that goal. Dansko is one of the brightest examples.
